Maina wa Mũtonya has been involved in teaching in universities in Kenya, South Africa and Mexico and his research has been published globally. His teaching and research interests revolve around the broad area of African Studies, Gĩkũyũ language and culture, African Literature, Swahili language and culture, gender studies, decolonial thought, Diaspora and exile studies amongst others. His research considers the interaction between culture, politics and popular music in Africa and the African Diaspora. Maina wa Mũtonya recently published his poem Matũhũhũ ma Wandahuhu in Gĩkũyũ language in the international Imbiza Journal of African Writing in South Africa. He has previously published poetry and essays in Gĩkũyũ with the Mwĩhoko magazine in Mũrang’a. As an academic, he has published widely on Gĩkũyũ music, African Literature and gender politics in Kenya. Mũtonya writes in Gĩkũyũ, Kiswahili, English and Spanish and has very basic conversational skills in Zulu and Lingala.
